[דעה אישית שאינה מייצגת את הקהילה]

מוטי קהת פעם סיפר לי שאביו ז״ל אמר ״עליה לארץ ישראל אינה חובה אלא זכות.״
היום לפני כפּעמיים-חי שנים, היתה לדייאן ולי הזכות לעלות ארצה מוושינגטון, עם שני בנים קטנים; עוד שניים נולדו פה. חברת אל-על אִרגנה טיסה מלֵאת רעש של עולים חדשים לציין 2,000 טיסות של עולים ארצה. בן השנה-וחצי שלנו בכה עד קפריסין. בנמל התעופה בן גוריון קיבלו פנינו בחוץ נואמים רבים ואף תזמורת. (זוכרים את המדרגות והאוטובוסים בשדה התעופה?) היה יום של 40 מעלות. היינו מותשים וּמטפטפים.
הנאום הכי מעניין היה של דוד לוי, שר השיכון וסגן ראש הממשלה דאז. ״אל תחשבו את עצמכם מיוחדים כל כך. תטיילו בארץ וּראו מה הישׂגנו פה גם לפני שהגעתם.״
זמנים שונים היו. אוכלוסיית מדינת ישראל מנתה 4 מילון נפשות (כיום 8.5 מיליון). התמ"ג היה 31.8 מיליארד דולר (כיום 350). תוך חודש התפטר מנחם בגין ז״ל מראשות הממשלה. האינפלציה היתה 21%… לחודש. מטבע המדינה כבר לא היה ל״י אלא שקל, אך עדיין לא שקל חדש. זמנים שונים, בעיות שונות.
ב-1987 עברנו מהגבעה הצרפתית לשכונת בקעה שונה מכפי שהיא היום. אחרי שניסינו כמעט כל בית כנסת במרחק הליכה, גילינו ב-1991 את בית כנסת עמק רפאים. דוד שטיינר ז״ל פעם הסביר לנו למה קראו לו בית כנסת עמק רפאים. כשהֵקימו את בית הכנסת ב-1949, היו הרבה שׂדות בשכונה, וממש ראו את רחוב עמק רפאים. בית הכנסת היה קטן יותר, עם אוכלוסיה מבוגרת יותר. (בני שישים ומשהו נדמו לנו אז ממש מבוגרים.) עזרת הנשים היתה מנותקת בחדר נפרד. המייסדים היו רוּבם פליטים שבאו אחרי מלחמת עולם השניה ממרכז אירופה ומזרחה. אף אחד לא יצא החוצה בשעת תפילת יזכור. (ראו היסטוריה של שנים הראשונות של בית הכנסת.)
היינו קבוצה של משפחות צעירות שהביאו דם חדש. הוותיקים אולי לא אהבו תמיד את הסגנונות או הדעות של החדשים, אבל בד״כ הסתדרנו יפה מאוד, תוך חיבה וכבוד הדדי. הם קיבלו יפה את בוא הצעירים לקהילה, ואנחנו כיבדנו את המסורות שמצאנו עם בואנו.
בקיץ 2000 שיפצו והגדילו את בית הכנסת. עסקה בזה ועדת הבנייה (הרב ברוך רקובסקי ז״ל, ג׳יין מדווד ודייאן רוזנשיין). במשך הֶעשׂור הבא הגיעו עוד עולים חדשים אנגלו-סקסים.
מדינת ישראל אוהבת עליה אם כי לא תמיד את העולים החדשים עצמם. ביטוי מוצלח של הפרדוקס הזה נתן הסרט ״לול״ עם אריק איינשטיין ואורי זוהר, שהופק ב-1973 בעת העליה הגרוזינית.
בשנים האחרונות נהנתה קהילתנו מזרם נוסף של עולים מצפון אמריקה, אנגליה, צרפת… מהם שהגשימו את חלומם לגור בארץ רק לאחר שילדיהם התבגרו. בין מתפללים פורצים לפעמים ויכוחים אף כי נראה לי שהם אולי פחות חריפים משהיו בתקופת המייסדים.
הנושׂאים לדיון ,תלוי במי אתה שואל. למשל התפילה נמשכת יותר מדי זמן, הרעש מפריע, ורבו שליחי ציבור המִספּללים בעִבריס אשׁכנזיס. וכמובן פחות מדי צעירים בשבת בבוקר. ויש שאומרים שאין לכך בכלל סיכוי בשל אופי בית הכנסת שכניסת צעירים בלתי אפשרית! ועוד חדשות — עברית היא עדיין השפה הרשמית שלנו לאחר 70 שנה!
אנחנו בתקופה של ימי בין המְצָרים, וחשוב מאוד שנמשיך להעריך את הזולת כבית תפילה וּכקהילה, בסבלנות ובכבוד הדדי.
My Turn

Mordy Kehat-Hurwich once quoted his father ז״ל as saying, "Aliyah to Israel is a privilege (זכות), not an obligation (חובה)."
Today, exactly 2 x 18 summers ago, Diane and I had the זכות of making aliyah from Washington, D.C., with two little boys in tow; two more were born here. El Al organized a noisy flight entirely of olim to mark its 2,000th flight carrying olim. We refueled in Amsterdam. Our 1½ year old cried past Cyprus. At Ben-Gurion there were speeches and even a band to welcome us on the tarmac. (Remember the tarmac and busses to Terminal 1?) It was the hottest day of the year, and we were all dripping and frazzled.
The most memorable speech was by David Levy, Minister of Housing and Deputy Prime Minister, who said, "Don't think yourselves so special. Travel around the country and appreciate what we accomplished here… before you arrived."
They were different times. Israel's population was 4m (today's it's 8.5m). GDP was $31b (now it's $350b). Within a month, Menachem Begin had resigned. Inflation was 21%… per month. The old currency was no longer the lira (ל״י) but the shekel (שׁ), and not yet the NIS new shekel (₪). Different times, different problems.
We moved from French Hill to quite a different Bak'a in 1987. After trying every beit knesset within walking distance, we discovered Beit Knesset Emek Refaim in 1991. David Steiner ז״ל once explained why they called it that. When it was founded in 1949, there were so many fields around that you could actually see Emek Refaim St. The shul was smaller then, with an older population. (Of course, in those days 60-somethings were pretty old.) The women's section was sealed off in a separate room. The founders had almost all been refugees from Post-War Central and Eastern Europe, i.e. nobody walked out for Yizkor. (See history of the early years of the Beit Knesset.)
We were a small group of families supplying some young blood. The old-timers weren't always 100% thrilled with the newcomers' style or ideas, but we did all get along well. I think that there was mutual respect and affection between the generations, and the veterans appreciated the "rebirth" of their beloved shul. For our part, we honored the traditions which predated our arrival.
In the summer of 2000 the shul was extended and renovated in its present form, led by our stalwart building committee: Rabbi Baruch Rackovsky ז״ל, Jane Medved and Diane Rosenschein. It really started filling up over the coming decade, driven largely by the arrival of more "Anglo-Saxon" olim.
Israel's a funny place. Israelis love aliyah if not always olim bringing their Alt-Neu ways. The best demonstration of this tradition is in the movie "Lool" (1973), starring Arik Einstein and Uri Zohar. The scene here is a must-watch depiction of generations of olim criticizing the next newcomers, and it only goes as far as the aliyah from Georgia in the early 1970's.
In recent years, our shul has enjoyed an influx of newer olim, North American, British, French… , many of whom raised families abroad but are living the dream of retiring here in Israel. There's no shortage of different viewpoints, but they pale in comparison to the traumatized Holocaust survivors' contrasting traditions.
Here are a few examples. Depending on whom you ask, the תפילה is too long, there is too much talking, there is too much Ashkenazis davening, and, of course, there are not enough young people on Shabbat morning. Many people tell me that the young people will absolutely never come back in our lifetimes (no room)! And [News Flash]: our official language for 70 years now is still Hebrew!
As we begin the Three Weeks, I hope that we appreciate and treat both our house of prayer and community, with all our clashing opinions, with kinder eyes, in patience and respect. I look forward to hearing your opinions.
