I. Four Orthodox Responses to Modernity: Mendelssohn, Sofer, Hirsch, Hildesheimer

This series will explore how these 19th century products of the halakhic tradition grappled with the challenges presented by a fundamentally new and different historical context, and their relevance for us today.

Sam Kapustin has a B.A. (History) from Yeshiva University, M.A. (History) and M.Ed., from the University of Toronto, and pursued further graduate work in history at the University of Toronto. He has a Principal’s Diploma from York University.

Mr. Kapustin’s 38 year teaching career was spent at the Community Hebrew Academy of Toronto as a teacher of Jewish History and Philosophy, Dept. Head, Jewish History, and as Principal of Jewish Studies. He also taught for many years at the Jewish Teacher's Seminary of Toronto

The author of several articles on the teaching of Jewish history, Mr. Kapustin
co-edited Lawrence Schiffman’s From Text to Tradition: A History of Second Temple and Rabbinic Judaism (Ktav, 1991).

II. In-Depth Study of Various Halachic Issues

Focusing on “classic” lomdus, topics such as shlichut, kiddushin, kinyanim and nezikin will be examined.

Rav Tabory studied in Yeshivat Or Etzion and Har Etzion. He has a BA from Herzog College and semicha from the Rabbanut. He served as Rav Shaliach for Bnei Akiva in the UK and was the founding rabbi of Kehillat Alei Tzion in London. He was one of the founders and Director of Moshava’s Mach Hach Hesder program. Rav Tabori has been Rosh Beit Midrash at Camp Stone, Rav on Machal, TVI, and Moshava IO. He is presently a Ra”m at Yeshivat Eretz Hatzvi.
