"Halakhah, Jewish Ethics and What's in Between" (in English)

We will analyze the relation of Jewish ethics to halakhah and study questions such as:

  • Does halakhah define Jewish values?
  • Can there be an immoral halakhah?
  • What makes a teshuvah moral?
  • What is justice (צדק)?
  • What is "going beyond the letter of the law' (לפנים משורת הדין)?
  • How does Image of God (צלם אלוקים) influence Jewish ethics and law?
  • What is the role of "Love your peer as yourself" (ואהבת לרעך כמוך) in Jewish ethics and law?
  • What are Jewish military ethics (a just war)?
  • How did Hazal deal with violent texts, e.g. Amalek, Akedah, zealotry of Pinchas?
  • Is it ethical to receive organ transplants but not donate organs?
  • What is the moral and halakhic status of gentiles?
  • How are ethical values related to holiness?
