בשל ביקוש רב למושבים בתקופת החגים השנה, בית הכנסת עמק רפאים שמח לבשר על מקום תפילה נוסף שיתקיים במעונם של הרב שלמה ושושי ווילק, ועלינו לשבח את משפחת הרב על התנדבותם.

בשנים קודמות לארי ז"ל ומרשה רוט פתחו את המניין המשפחתי שלהם לחברי הקהילה שלנו. עקב סיבות שונות מניין זה נסגר השנה. אנו מעריכים מאוד את הכנסת האורחים שלהם בעשור האחרון ומודים להם על כך.

שימו לב שהמניין החדש פתוח לכל מי שנוהג להתפלל בבית הכנסת. לא יהיה יותר צורך להושיב מתפללים בכיסאות בחצר בית הכנסת.

מניין ה"בוטיק" החדש יספק את כל התפילות והשירותים הנדרשים בתקופת הימים הנוראים, כגון בעלי תפילה מנוסים, קוראים בתורה, תוקע בשופר וכו'. כל אלו יתקיימו בהנחייתו והדרכתו של הגבאי המנוסה מרדכי פנקובר.

בית משפחת וילק ממוקם בקומת קרקע, עם גישה לגינתם הסמוכה, המוצלת והאוורירית. התנאים הפיזיים יהיו נוחים, ויכללו כסאות, מיזוג אוויר ומחיצה כשרה. ריץ' בראונסטיין יהיה אחראי על עניינים אלו. אנו רוצים להודות מראש למרדכי וריץ' על רוח ההתנדבות שלהם ופעילותם בנושא זה.

"בונוס" מיוחד שיסופק במניין חדש זה יהיה קידוש שיתקיים במקום, בין קריאת התורה לתקיעת השופר. המתפללים במניין לא יצטרכו ללכת ולחזור במהירות לבית הכנסת תוך 30 דקות. השנה אפשר להשאיר את נעלי הריצה בבית (לא כולל יום כיפור כמובן…).

כל מי שמעוניין להשתתף במניין זה מוזמן לפנות לשמעון קהן או ליעקב בסטהוף בשבוע הקרוב. בנוסף, שימו לב שכל הזמנות המקום עבור הימים הנוראים, צריכות להישלח לכל המאוחר עד יום ראשון ה-25 באוגוסט (י"ט באלול).

וועד הקהילה

Due to the many requests for seating this year, Bet Knesset Emek Refaim is happy to announce the establishment of a second minyan that will be taking place at the home of Rav Shlomo and Shoshi Vilk. We wish to thank the Vilk Family for extending this generous invitation to our members.

In past years Larry ז"ל and Marsha Roth had opened their family minyan to people from our community. For various reasons this group is closing down this year. We appreciate their hospitality over this last decade.

Please note that this new minyan will be open to all who doven with us at our shul. No longer will there be a need for us to place our regular overflow crowd on chairs outside the synagogue itself.

This new “boutique” minyan will be providing all services needed for the Yomim Noraim. This includes experienced ba’ale tefillah, Torah readers, shofar blower, etc. All of this will be taking place under the expert direction of gabbai Monty Penkower.

The Wilk home is on the ground floor with full access to their adjacent shady and airy garden. As to the physical arrangement itself, it will be quite comfortable with chairs, air-conditioning and a kosher mechitza. Rich Brownstein will be taking responsibility for these particular issues. We thank in advance both Monty and Rich for their volunteerism.

The one bonus being provided at this new minyan will be a kiddush on the premises to be held between Torah reading and the sounding of the shofar. No longer will there be a need to rush back and forth from the shul in 30 minutes of less. This year you can leave your running shoes at home except of course for Yom Kippur.

Anyone interested in attending this minyan should please speak to Shimon (Howie) Kahn or Yaakov Besthof in the next week. Also please note that all reservations for the Yomim Noraim should be sent in no later than Sunday August 25th (19th of Elul).

שלום חברים,

שיראל חנה ואני, נחמה רחל, ביקשנו לכתוב את הדברים הבאים כדי להודות לקהילה על הברכות והחסד שהרעפתם עלינו במהלך תהליך הגיור שלנו.

פגשנו והתיידדנו עם אנשים רבים בקהילה והתחלנו להרגיש מאוד בנוח בקהילה חמה זה. הקידוש הנהדר שכבדתם אותנו בו בשבת שעברה, וסידורי התפילה המיוחדים שנתתם כדי לשמוח בהשלמת התכנית שלנו, היו הפתעה נפלאה מאוד. התכבדנו ושמחנו במילות העידוד של חברי הקהילה. תודה לכולכם העוזרים לנו להרגיש רצויות בקהילת עמק רפאים, כמו גם במשפחה יהודית הגדולה יותר. אנו מצפים להמשך החברויות שלנו בקהילה ובקבלת חברים חדשים ככל שעובר זמן.

הרב וילק מצא את ההסברים על השמות העברים החדשים שלנו מעניינים וביקש מאיתנו לחלוק את זה עם הקהילה. קרולין ז'אן, בחרה לתרגם את שמה באופן צמוד למשמעות בעברית. "קרול" באנגלית פירושו שיר, ולכן היא בחרה "שיראל", כלומר שירו של הקב"ה. היא אהבה את זה במיוחד כי יש לו את כל אותן האותיות כמו ישראל, עם שתי האותיות הראשונות בשינוי מקום. השם האמצעי שלה הוא תרגום של חנה. שיראל הייתה 'בת נח' במשך 40 שנים, והתאהבה בעם ישראל בטיול הראשון שלה כאן בשנת 1982, ואני חושבת שהשם מתאים לה מאוד.

אני, אמנדה, בחרתי את שם נחמה רחל, בגלל המשמעות הרוחנית של מה שהגיור שלי מסמל כחלק מהתמונה של הגאולה הגדולה יותר. הנביא כותב על אמא רחל מבכה על בניה ומסרבת להינחם כי הם יצאו לגלות. אני מרגישה כאילו אני אחד מהילדים אבודים, שחזר מהגלות, ובכך גם מביאה נחמה לאמא רחל ומנחמת אותה בחיבוק חם אחרי הרבה שנות נדודים בעמים.

את שם המשפחה בחרנו כיוון שהסיפור במשפחה הוא שבמורביה שבצ'כיה, לפני 1870, היה שם המשפחה מרקוביץ, כלומר ייתכן שהשורשים של המשפחה יהודיים! גם שיראל החליטה לאמץ את שם המשפחה שלי.

תודה לכם, שוב, לכל אחד ואחת, להצטרפותכם איתנו לשמחה בחשיפת הניצוצות היהודים הנסתרים שלנו, וחיבור מחדש של נשמות לעם ישראל! אנו שמחות מאוד לשוב!

To the members of Beit Knesset Emek Refaim

Shalom Friends!

Shirel Hannah and I (Nechama Rachel) wanted to write a short note to tell you that we have been so very, very blessed by all the loving kindness that we have been shown during our conversion to Judaism by everyone at Beit Knesset Emek Refaim.

We have met and made many special friends over the last year and we have begun to feel very comfortable in this warm community. The fabulous Kiddush that you provided for us last Shabbat, and the extra special Hebrew prayer books which you gave us to celebrate the completion of our program, were a very wonderful surprise. We were so very honored by your encouragement and by the joy that you all shared with us. Thank you all for making us feel welcome in the Emek Refaim community, as well as in the larger Jewish family. We look forward to continuing our friendships in the community and making new friends as time goes on.

Rav Vilk found the explanations of our new Hebrew names interesting and asked us to share this with you. My friend, Carolyn Jean, chose to closely translate her name into Hebrew equivalents. “Carol” in English means a song, so she chose “Shirel”, meaning Song of G-d. She especially liked this because it has all the same letters as Israel, with the first 2 letters transposed. Her middle name is a straight translation of Hannah. Since Shirel was a Bat Noach for over 40 years, and fell in love with Israel on her first trip here in 1982, I think the name suits her very well.

For myself (Amanda), I chose the name Nechama Rachel, rather than something associated with my English name, because of the spiritual essence of what my conversion has meant to me within the larger, unfolding picture of the Geula. The prophet writes of Mother Rachel crying for her children and refusing to be comforted because they have gone into exile. I feel as if I am one of those lost children, returning from exile, to the fold and to the land, thus both bringing comfort to Mother Rachel and being comforted by her warm embrace after many years wandering in the nations.

Both Shirel and I will be taking my family name, Markovich. Upon arriving in America in the 1870’s, the family name was shortened to Marek, but my grandfather told me that Markovich was the family name when they were still in Moravia, in the Czech Republic.

Thank you, again, one and all, for joining with us in celebrating the revealing of our hidden Jewish sparks, and the reattachment of our Neshamas to Am Yisrael! We are overjoyed to be back!
