In Jerusalem, shiva is being observed from Wednesday afternoon until Friday

How did his father, his mother and his university studies in Berlin shape his view of Judaism in different ways?
How does halakhah relate to the basic human condition?

Why did Rav Soloveitchik “convert” to Zionism?
What is his approach to suffering and why tzadikim sometimes suffer?
What was his attitude toward other religions and interfaith relations?
Was R. Soloveitchik primarily a rosh yeshiva or a philosopher?
Why is R. Soloveitchik important today? Is he important for Israeli religious
life?
Eugene Korn has semichah from Pirchei Shoshanim and holds a Ph.D.in moral philosophy from Columbia Columbia University (New York City). He has taught general and Jewish philosophy at Columbia, Yeshiva and Seton Hall Universities. He was founding editor of The Edah Journal and has published more than 40 scholarly essays on Jewish thought, Jewish ethics and halakhah and essays on Jewish thought, Jewish ethics and halakhah, and Jewish-Christian relations. His writings have been translated into Hebrew, Spanish, German, and Italian. He and his wife, Lila Magnus Korn, made Aliyah in 2014.
לפני מספר חדשים ביקר קנצלר (ראש הממשלת) אוסטריה סבסטיאן קורץ בארץ. נפגשנו איתו – עם עוד קבוצת עולי אוסטריה במועדון בירושלים. בהזדמנות זו הוא הזמין קבוצה של ילידי אוסטריה בארץ לביקור בוינה על חשבון ממשלתם, ביניהם חוה ואברהם דוד ומרדכי וחיה סלע.
תאריך הביקור נקבע ל-6.11.18 עד 13.11. אותו שבוע כלל שני ארועים חשובים לאוסטריה. האחד 100 שנה ליסוד הריפובליקה האוסטרית והשני – החשוב לנו – את 80 שנה לליל הבדולח (הפרעות ביהודי אוסטריה וגרמניה).
האירוע מֵתחילתו ועד סופו היה ממלכתי, לבבי, מוקפד ומתוכנן לפרטי פרטים, כולל אוכל ושתיה כשרים .
בין הארועים בהם השתתפנו, ביקור בבית הכנסת הגדול בוינה, בהשתתפות ראשי הקהילה היהודית ונציגים של הממשלה. ביקור בישיבה מיוחדת של הפּרלמנט וקבלת פנים שם של הקבוצה הישראלית שכללה ארוחת צהרים כשרה. ביקור בבית העלמין היהודי לאלה שקרוביהם קבורים שם.
בבנין האופרה התקיים ארוע מיוחד לציון 100 שנה ליסוד הרפובליקה האוסטרית. נָאמוּ שם הנשׂיא, ראש הממשלה, יו"ר הפּרלמנט. בנאומים שלהם סקרו את ההיסטוריה של המדינה כשחלק ניכר מאד כלל את עליית הנאציזם, ההצטרפות לגרמניה (האַנְשְׁלוּס), תופעת האנטישמיות, דיכוי ,גירוש והפּוגרומים ביהודים, ועל הצורך למנוע חזרה של תופעות כאלה.
השתתפנו בטקס במלאת 80 שנה לליל הבדולח שהתקיים באזור היהודי ליד האנדרטה לזכר 66,000 יהודי אוסטריה שניספו בשואה. הטקס כלל מצעד לפידים של בני הנוער היהודי ברחבי העיר, ואח"כ נאומיהם של יו"ר הפרלמנט, הרב הראשי וראשי הקהילה.
מרדכי סלע נקרא לבמה לספר על אירועי ליל הבדולח בהם נוכח כאשר היה בן 6 בלבד, והציג בפני הקהל שני עצי חיים של שני ספרי תורה שניצלו על ידי אביו ועל ידו. עצי חיים אלה נדדו עם המשפחה בכל שנות הנדודים.
יש לציין את האהדה הרבה, הדאגה וההתחשבות המירבית בצרכי הקבוצה, שרובם היו אנשים מבוגרים מאד וחלקם נֵכים בכסאות גלגלים. הדבר התבטא ברכבי הסעה לנכים, אמבולנס צמוד ושני פַּרַמֶדִיקִים שליוו את הקבוצה במשך 24 שעות ביממה. וכן קבוצת מלווים קבועה של משׂרד החינוך האוסטרי.
לסיכום, היתה לנו חויה בלתי צפויה ומרגשת מאד. חזרנו הביתה מאד נרגשים ונפעמים מהיחס המיוחד והאוהד שקיבלנו מכל הצוות שטיפל בנו.

A few months ago the Chancellor of Austria, Sebastian Kurz, visited Israel. We met with him here in Jerusalem, along with other Israelis of Austrian origin. He invited us to an official visit in Vienna, compliments of the Austrian government. We were included, as well as Avraham and Chava David.
The visit took place November 6-13. That week two events were commemorated in Austria: the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the Austrian Republic (at the end of World War I). The second — closer to home — was the 80th anniversary of Kristallnacht.
From beginning to end, the event was official and proper, but also warm and super-organized to the nth degree, including kosher food.
Among other events, we visited in the main synagogue of Vienna, the Stadttempel, in attendance with heads of the Jewish community and government representatives. We attended a special session of the Austrian Parliament, including a special reception for our group of Israeli visitors and a kosher meal. There was a visit to the Jewish Cemetery of Vienna in respect of family members buried there.
At the Vienna Opera, we attended a special event honoring the 100th anniversary of the Austrian Republic. The President, Prime Minister, and the Speaker of the Parliament all spoke about the history of Austria, with no small coverage of the rise of Nazism, the Anschluss, Antisemitism, the repressions, expulsions and pogroms against Jews — and the need to prevent any future return of these dangerous phenomena.
We participated in a ceremony marking 80 years since Kristallnacht, which was held at the memorial honoring 66,000 Austrian Jews killed in the Shoah. The ceremony included a march by Jewish youth carrying torches, followed by speeches by the Speaker of the Parliament, the Chief Rabbi, and heads of the Jewish community.
Mordechay Sela was asked to the podium to share his memories (in German) as a personal witness of that awful night, when he was just a boy of six. He showed two Trees of Life (עץ חיים) from two Torah scrolls, which he and his father personally rescued. These trees of life have been carried by his family throughout the last 80 years.
We want to emphasize our hosts' care and attention to the needs of our group, most of whom were older in years, including several wheelchair-bound visitors. This showed itself in special busses and transportation, and an accompanying ambulance with two paramedics 24/7. We were also accompanied the entire trip by a group from the Austrian Ministry of Education.
In conclusion, it was an unexpected and emotional experience. We returned home very moved from the warm attitude and treatment of our Austrian hosts.
