לפני חמישים שנה נפתחה מלחמת יום הכיפורים. הייתי בן שבע אז, ואני זוכר את האזעקות והיציאה של ההורים והאחים של כולם למילואים, זוכר את אימי ז"ל האורזת מזוודה, כי אולי לא נחזור הביתה יותר. למלחמה ההיא קראו מלחמת יום הכיפורים, משום ששמו ומשמעותו של החג התאימה בדיוק לאוירה, אוירה של חשש ואימה.
לפני כשבוע חגגנו חג אחר לחלוטין, חג שציין את סיומם של הימים הנוראים יום אחד קודם, חג שׂמחת תורה. למלחמה שאנו לוחמים עתה אי אפשר לקרוא מלחמת שׂמחת תורה כמובן, לא רק משום שהשם לא מתאים לאירועים, אלא בעיקר משום ששׂמחת תורה השנה לא הייתה סיומם של הימים הנוראים, אלא שׂיאם של הימים הללו. יום הכיפורים השנה חל בשׂמחת תורה.
כולנו חרדים לשלום העם הזה, חרדים לשלום החיילים בדרום ובצפון וכואבים את הטבח הנורא שממדיו המזעזעים מתגלים מיום ליום. כולנו נבוכים, בני משפחה של אחדים מחברי הקהילה נרצחו או נפלו בקרב, נפצעו, נפלו בשבי או נחטפו, ולהבדיל, רבים מבני הזוג שלנו, ילדינו ובני משפחתינו מגויסים למלחמה. אנו מתפללים לשלום הפצועים, השבויים והחיילים, ואבלים על אלו שנפלו.
דיברתי עם שני בני וחתני, השותפים בלחימה בדרום. שלשתם מתארים את הזוועות שהם נתקלים בהם בדמעות, ובאותן דמעות הם מספרים על ערבות הדדית ועל התגייסות מופלאה של העם הזה כדי להביא לנצחון. אנו, היושבים בבית בלב רועד על מה שהיה ועל מה שעומד לפנינו, מתחזקים מהצעירים שלנו, המבטיחים כי ננצח גם הפעם, לא רק בגלל הטנקים, המטוסים, הנשק המתוחכם ויכולות המודיעין, אלא בגלל הלב והאמונה שלנו.
השׂפה העברית קוראת להרוגי המלחמה 'חללים', חלל זהו מרחב פנוי, ריק, והשאלה מה מתרחש בחלל פנוי. חלל יכול להישאר רֵיק ושומם, עצוב וכואב, אולם אנו יודעים כי ה'חלל הפנוי' של יהודים מלא מיד בקדיש, יתגדל ויתקדש שמיה רבא, המבקש שלום במרומיו ויעשה שלום עלינו. 'חללים' יהודים קוראים לפעול, לקוות, להאמין כי 'בדמייך חיי, בדמייך חיי'.
עם ישראל יקום מן האֵבל, וכמו תמיד, יזכור את חלליו וימשיך להתעצם ברוח ובכֹח. האבלות שלנו לא נועדה לשקוע בעצב וגם לא לשכוח אותו, אלא למצוא כוחות כדי להתגבר. לא 'להמשיך הלאה' כפי שרבים אומרים, אלא למלא חלל פנוי, לא לשכוח ולא לבקש נקם, אלא לתקן עולם במלכות שדי. כך יקרה גם הפעם, ב"ה. ילדינו הבטיחו לנו זאת, בשם ה' אלקי צבאות.
תנחומַי למשפחות הקהילה שיקיריהם נפגעו ומתו באבדן הנורא, יחד עם תנחומי הקהל כולו. אנו אבלים עם הרבנית רות רקובסקי על הירצחה של עדי מרגלית ויטל-קפלוּן, אשת נכדָה, בנם של יונה ויונדב קפּלוּן, וכן על הירצחה של חברתו של נכד שני, תהילה. אנו מודים לאל על הנס, בהינצלם של שני הנינים על גבול רצועת עזה ע״י גיבורה שכנה בשם אביטל אלג׳ם. זוכרים שבתוך המילה 'אסון', מסתתרות היטב אותיות המילה 'נס'.

To our dear Yael community,
Fifty years ago, the Yom Kippur War burst out. I was only seven then, but how well I remember the wail of sirens — and everyone’s fathers and brothers rushing off to miluim. I remember my mother ז״ל hurriedly packing a bag because we might never return home again. It was appropriately named the Yom Kippur War because the day’s name and meaning so fitted the atmosphere, a mood of dread and horror.
A week ago, we observed such a different holiday, Simḥat Torah, marking the end of the Yamim Noraim. We could never name this war the Simḥat Torah War, not only because the name wouldn’t fit the events — but because Simḥat Torah this year didn’t end the Yamim Noraim (literally terrible days) — but rather marked the height of them. Yom Kippur this year actually started on Simḥat Torah.
We are all anxious for our nation, anxious for the safety of our soldiers in the South and the North, and are reeling from the shock of the gruesome massacre, whose sickening dimensions are still unfolding each day. We are confused. Family members of our kehillah have been murdered or fell in battle, wounded, captured, or terrifyingly taken hostage. Lehavdil, many of our spouses, children and family members are called to battle. We pray for the safety of the wounded, the prisoners, the soldiers — and mourn in anguish for those killed.
I spoke with two of my sons and my son-in-law, who are in the fight down South. In tears, they recounted the atrocities they’ve witnessed and will never un-see. But those same tears tell our story of mutual responsibility and the steadfast mobilization of this people to survive and fight back until victory. We, those who must sit at home with trembling hearts for what has happened — and still faces us — must draw strength from our young people, who are the ones who will ensure that we survive and prevail this time, too. It is not only the tanks, jets, sophisticated weaponry, and intelligence capabilities that we lean on — but our heart and faith.
In Hebrew we call those killed in war ‘halalim’. ‘Halal’ means a void, an empty space, and the question is what happens in an empty space. It can remain hollow, desolate, despondent, and pained, but the empty space of Jews is replaced immediately with kaddish: “יִתְגַּדַּל וְיִתְקַדַּשׁ שְׁמֵיהּ רַבָּא”. We ask the Almighty “יַעֲשֶׂה שָׁלוֹם עָלֵינוּ וְעַל כָּל יִשְׂרָאֵל”. Empty space calls us as Jews to act, to hope, to believe that וָאֹ֤מַר לָךְ֙ בְּדָמַ֣יִךְ חֲיִ֔י וָאֹ֥מַר לָ֖ךְ בְּדָמַ֥יִךְ חֲיִֽי (live despite your blood) – [Ezekiel 16:6].
The people of Israel will rise from our mourning and, as ever, remember with love our fallen and get stronger, in spirit and in power. Our tragically long history of mourning drives for us neither to sink into grief nor disregard it, but to connect with our power to overcome tragedy. Not to ‘move forward’ as many would say, but to fill the void, neither to ignore the pain nor to seek revenge, but to improve the world in the image of God. We will achieve this now, too, ב״ה. Our children assure us of this, in the name of God.
My heartfelt condolences go out to members of our kehillah whose loved ones have been injured or have been killed in the most indescribable heartbreaking of losses, together with condolences of the entire kehillah. We mourn with Ruthie Rackovsky the murder of Adi Margalit Vital-Kaploun ז״ל, the wife of her grandson, son of Yona and Yonadav Kaploun. We also mourn with her the murder of Tehila, the girlfriend of another grandson. We thank God for the miracle of the rescue of two great-grandchildren at the Gaza border, thanks to the bravery of a neighbor, Avital Aladjem. Remember that the hidden letters for ‘miracle’ (נס) within the horrible word ‘disaster’ (אסון).
